NHS Nurse Pay Rise 2025

NHS Nurses Secure 3.6% Pay Rise - But Is It Enough?

Earlier this summer, the NHS Pay Review Body (NHSPRB) confirmed a 3.6% pay increase for NHS nurses and all Agenda for Change staff in England and Wales, with the uplift back-dated to 1st April 2025 and set to appear in August pay packets.

What It Means in Numbers

The starting salary for a Band 5 registered nurse jumps from £27,055 (2022/23) to approximately £31,048–31,050 in 2025.

Across all bands from Band 5 right through to Band 9, pay scales have been adjusted. A full breakdown is available via NHS Employers, detailing updated annual and hourly rates.

Sentiment in the Sector

The Royal College of Nursing said, "RCN members are having their say on the 3.6% pay award, with tens of thousands having already voted in the consultations’ first days. Overall, 345,000 members across England, Northern Ireland and Wales will be asked whether they believe this year’s award is enough."

Context: Above Inflation but Still a Squeeze?

Although this increase is slightly above the current 3.5% CPI inflation rate, many frontline nurses feel it does not go far enough, especially given a long stretch of real terms pay cuts and soaring living costs.

Public sentiment seems to back their side too. A YouGov survey found 75% of Brits believe nurses deserve higher pay, and 66% say the government doesn’t value them enough.

What’s Next for NHS Nurses?

  • Vote results: RCN and Unite consultations are crucial. A rejection could prompt strike votes.

  • Long-term reform: NHS Staff Council plans to review band structures in 2026 to tackle entrenched pay inequalities.

  • Budget pressures: With no extra Treasury funds, the rise must come from existing departmental budgets, raising concerns about cuts to staffing or services.

Final Thoughts

This pay increase offers some relief after years of fiscal squeeze, but for many nurses, it’s still not the recognition they feel they’ve earned.
